Her husband sold her in a Kuntankhana (brothel) for 500 rupees a few days after they married. Gangubai hesitantly began working as a prostitute. During the 1960s, In Kamathipura, St. Anthony’s Girls’ High School was founded at the same time. As a result, the brothel was ordered to relocate. Gangubai was adamantly opposed to this and successfully presented her case to then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, resulting in the brothel not being moved.
