UN Official Condemns Detention Of Teesta Setalvad, Seeks Immediate Release

New Delhi: A United Nations official on Saturday expressed deep concern concerning the detention of activist Teesta Setalvad by the Gujarat Police.  Mary Lawlor, the United Nations particular rapporteur took to Twitter on Sunday to sentence the detention of activist-journalist Teesta Setalvad (now arrested) by the Crime Department, Ahmedabad. In her tweet, the UN official wrote: “Teesta is a powerful voice towards hatred and discrimination. Defending human rights is just not a criminal offense. I name for her launch and an finish to persecution by Indian state.”

Setalvad was detained by the Crime Department in Mumbai on Saturday and brought to Ahmedabad later that evening. Earlier, former IPS officer RB Sreekumar was additionally arrested.  The arrests come days after the Supreme Courtroom had dismissed a petition difficult the clear chit given by the SIT to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and others within the 2002 post-Godhra riots instances.

The motion follows the Gujarat Police’s first info report (FIR) which names Setalvad, Former Director Normal of Police of Gujarat RB Sreekumar, and suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for alleged fabrication of proof within the 2002 Gujarat riots case.

In the meantime, the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) strongly condemned the arrests of Setalvad and Sreekumar on social media and criticised the Gujarat Police for submitting a case towards Bhatt.

The suspended IPS officer is serving life imprisonment in reference to a 1990 custodial demise case. “In a number of high-profile instances associated to the Gujarat pogrom, the perpetrators have both been acquitted by the notorious and compromised Particular Investigations Crew or granted bail after being convicted,” the council tweeted on Saturday.
